Image titleThe Tunnel to Towers 5K was created to honor the life of fallen NYC firefighter, Stephen Siller. Stephen had just ended his shift and was on his way to play with his brothers when he heard the first tower had just been hit. He called his wife and immediately returned to his station to help. Stephen got his gear and drove his truck to the Brooklyn Tunnel which was closed when he got there. He then grabbed his 60 lbs of gear and continued to the twin towers on foot where he lost his life trying to save others. The first Tunnel to Towers 5K was held in NYC in September 2002. It now takes place all over the country. Proceeds from the 5Ks go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation which uses $0.83 of every dollar goes towards  programs such as Building for America's Bravest, which builds smart homes for our nation's most catastrophically injured military service members. A portion of the funds raised will also be used to benefit South Carolina's first responders, service members, and their families.
