Irmo, South Carolina, is located only 10 miles from Columbia as well as the Lake Murray shoreline and is known as “the gateway to Lake Murray.” Irmo was once the home to Cherokee Indians as well as German and Swiss immigrants. Irmo was incorporated in 1890 and flourished along the tracks of the Columbia, Newberry, and Laurens railroads on the high ridge between the rivers. During these times Irmo was a sleepy town of about 500 residents; today, the number of residents is closer to 12,000. Irmo is a thriving community with shopping, dining, and entertainment around almost every corner!
Irmo is also the home to nationally recognized Lexington/Richland District Five schools.
