The City of West Columbia was first chartered as a town in 1894 under the name Brookland. Since there was a town already called Brookland, the town adopted the name New Brookland, but in 1936 the town changed the charter to West Columbia.
The City of West Columbia is located on the eastern portion of Lexington County and is bordered by the Saluda River and Congaree River. West Columbia is located close to downtown Columbia and boasts many parks and areas of interest such as Carraway Park, Butler Community Park, Riverbanks Zoo Amphitheater, Fowler Park, Reeves Park, TriCity Leisure Center, numerous sporting events and Lake Murray.
