1st Ranked South Carolina Baseball Team Is Undefeated

South Carolina, which has thrown shutouts in more than half of its games during a 15-0 start, vaulted ahead of preseason No. 1 Virginia and Florida State into the top spot of Baseball America’s Top 25, the first time the Gamecocks have been top-ranked since their 2011 title.The Gamecocks have eight shutouts this season, including three straight in a home sweep of Brown this weekend. Florida State remained No. 2 after going 4-1, including a series win against Maryland. Virginia fell to No. 3 despite a winning a conference road series against Duke. The Cavs scored just seven runs all weekend, as their vaunted offense has yet to find its stride.Oregon State and N.C. State round out the top five, followed by Louisiana-Lafayette, Vanderbilt, LSU, Cal State Fullerton—which fell from No. 4—and Texas.In addition to Fullerton’s drop, other big sliders were Mississippi State, which fell to 24th after a 2-3 week; UCLA, which is No. 25 after going 1-3; and TCU and Fresno State, which dropped out after 2-2 weeks.Teams entering the rankings are Tennessee, which comes in at No. 22 after winning a road series at Arizona State, and UC Santa Barbara, which knocked off Mississippi State twice and Arizona once in Tucson. The Volunteers are ranked for the first time since February of 2007, while the Gauchos last appeared in the Top 25 in March of 2009.The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Last year’s records do not include ties.
