2015 Irmo Okra Strut Festival September 25th And 26th

2015 Irmo Okra Strut Festival September 25th and 26th. The 42nd Annual Irmo Okra Strut Festival takes place this Friday and Saturday, September 25th and 26th at Irmo Community Park. The Okra Strut began in October 1973 by the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's Club in an effort to raise money to build a library. The event took place inside at Seven Oaks Park and was a modest arts and crafts sale featuring fried okra. By the 6th annual Okra Strut, the event was moved outside to downtown Irmo. And by 1980, Irmo's first library was built. Today, the Okra Strut has become a 2-day event that is managed by a board of committee members who are appointed by the Irmo Town Council. The family-friendly event includes a street dance, live entertainment, a parade, arts & crafts, rides & amusements, a petting zoo, and lots of food including the famous fried okra still prepared by the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's Club. Proceeds go to various community projects, scholarships, and area improvements.
