Moving With Children To Irmo SC Chapin SC Lexington SC
Moving is difficult. Moving with children, especially young ones, is far more challenging. School is out for summer, which tends to be the easiest time to make a move since everyone's schedule is a bit more open and sleep schedules aren't so strict for little ones. If you're thinking of moving this summer, here are some tidbits of wisdom from a mom who has done it recently:
Packing: When packing up at your old home, label the box with where it's going in your new space. This is helpful so that you're not having to open and investigate the contents of a box at your new location before you can place it. You can also donate or sell items before moving to avoid dragging things across town & country that you don't need or want. There are plenty of local thrift shops that will even pick up large items for free if you're planning to donate.
Pace Yourself: You've figured out just how long you think it will take to move and unpack. Now add at least one day to that if possible, if not more. Our vacation time is precious, but your move can be made that much more joyful if you have at least enough time to unpack your clothing, kitchen and bathrooms so that life is functional when you must return to work. Moving with small children who cannot help, but still need your time takes longer, especially since they're in a new environment that A) isn't yet childproofed for them and B) isn't their "place". Their toys aren't around, their special place to sit & read or play isn't there anymore, and that is sure to make EVERYONE a little cranky! If you're super efficient and get done early, that extra day will truly feel like a vacation after all the stress you've been under.
Plan in Break Times: You'll need some breaks with little ones even though time is precious and you JUST WANNA BE UNPACKED! It's very easy to get caught up in the flow of things and wanting to keep the momentum going, but planning in small breaks to give specific attention to little ones will help with constant interruptions when they're begging for mama & daddy time that they need when you're busy and in the end might actually make the time that you spend making your new house a home more productive.
Ask for Help: Whether it's a home cooked meal from or with friends, a friend or family babysitting for a few hours, or strong backs to help do the heavy lifting, you'll be glad you asked. I mean you LOVE your new home, but running away from the chaos for a bit with some good conversation and good food will do you wonders and think of how productive you can be without having to worry about toddlers that are suddenly TOOO quiet.
Preparing Each Person's Space: Having little ones out of the house that cannot help with the transition is great, but not typically feasible for the entire move. That said, prepare their space as early in the move as possible so that they do have a place to go and some things to do. This way they can occupy themselves as much as possible. Letting them help with choosing their new room, helping place certain furniture in their room, talking to them beforehand about the move, and possibly shopping for a few new decorations will also be helpful depending on age.
Breathe It All In: Hey, it might be pizza or delivery for dinner, but open a bottle of wine or crack open a cold one with your significant other and bask in what you've accomplished at the end of the day! You worked hard to get to this point and made it through the dotting of the I's and the crossing of the T's with your agent, your lender, AND the attorneys. Plus, bedtime for the littles is around the corner and think of all you'll get done when those sweet, angelic little faces are ASLEEP!
