Chapin High School Band Director Hits The Right Notes

Chapin South Carolina has small town charm, fabulous Lake Murray and one of the nation’s best high school band directors. So says School Band and Orchestra, a national publication focusing on high school music education.

Recently the magazine named Chapin High school Band director Kevin Herbert to its list of top music educators nationwide.  Hebert was highlighted  as one of 50 Directors “Who Make a Difference.” One director from each state is selected annually by nominations from colleagues, students and other readers of the publication. This is the 17th year that SBO has published the listing to highlight “some of the best music educators across all fifty states.

Mr. Herbert is from Columbia, South Carolina and is an alumnus of near-by Irmo high school. He earned his Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina. He previously was the director of bands in the Bristol Tennessee School system.

In 2014 Chapin High School’s marching band won the 3A state  championship, their second state title in three years. Band has changed over the years, and performance and music are increasingly taking on a drum & bugle corps level of complexity and challenge. Most people don’t realize how much athleticism is really needed to pull off some of the shows bands are doing these days.
