Columbia SC Stars And Stripes Patriots WIN USSSA Global World Series In Myrtle Beach

On July 8, 2016 Youth Baseball teams from all around this nation gathered in Myrtle Beach to face off in the USSSA Global World Series. Right from the start, One of the standout teams of the tournament was Coach Nick Culvers 10U AAA Stars and Stripes Patriots, a smaller scrappy team that wins games with disciplined defense, solid and deep pitching, aggressive small ball and surprising power. In the first two days the team went 4-0 against some very respectable AA competition. On the third day of competition the Patriots faced a formidable home town rival The Lake Murray Bombers and thanks to several home runs and other power hitting the Bombers handed the Patriots their first tournament loss. Since this was a double elimination tournament the Patriots were in a do or die position going into the final days competition.  The first game was against the West Tennessee Indians, a Majors ranked team with over 2000 USSSA Ranking points. The battle was fierce from the get go and after some outstanding pitching , defense, and clutch hitting the teams ended the sixth inning tied at 8. In the bottom of the 8th things were looking dire for the Patriots as the Indians had runners on first and second with one out when their batter drove a sinking liner to right field. Remarkably the Patriot right fielder made a diving catch and popped up quickly to double up the Indians runner at first, disaster averted. Fired up by the game saving play the Patriots were able to eek out one run and thanks again to some lights out pitching and defense they were able to hold their lead and move onto the Championship game. Unfortunately there had to be a losing team in this Epic 9 inning Battle. Both teams and their coaching staffs played with class and a high level of sportsmanship. Despite the temperatures rising into the mid 90's by game time the Patriots were ready and energetic for their game against the Lake Murray Bombers. Both teams played well and the score was close throughout the game. After the top of the sixth and a failed dispute by the Lake Murray Bombers coach the Patriots top of the order started the inning with two walks. The bombers managed to get two out but with the bases loaded and two strikes on the Patriots batter he lined a hard single up the middle scoring the tying and winning run. By winning this tournament the Patriots are now ranked #1 for 10uAAA teams in South Carolina and # 13 Nationally by USSSA. A great group of kids , parents and Coach
