It appears as though many of those millennials who have been living in their parents basements are starting to move up and out! Through May of this year sales of existing homes in the greater Columbia, South Carolina market including the city of Columbia, Lexington County, Richland County, Irmo and Chapin were up an astounding 17% compared to last year. Sales included single family homes, townhomes and condominiums.
These results parallel those reported today by the National Association of Realtors, where nationwide existing-homes sales increased in May to their highest pace in nearly six years, with an increase in first time home buyers fueling the surge. National sales have now increased year-over year for eight consecutive months and are 9.3 percent above last year."The return of first-time buyers in May is an encouraging sign and is the result of multiple factors, including strong job gains among young adults, less expensive mortgage insurance and lenders offering low down payment programs," said Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist.Yet listings have failed to match the greater demand, fueling large price gains. This is good news if you have been thinking about selling your home.
