Columbia's Greek Festival September 17th thru 20th, 2015. Columbia's 29th Annual Greek Festival starts this Thursday and runs through Sunday. Held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 1931 Sumter Street, the festival is from 10 AM to 10 PM Thursday through Saturday, and 12 PM to 8 PM on Sunday. This family-friendly festival is free and everyone is encouraged to come out and be a "Greek for a Week"! The Greek Festival features culture and events, delicious food and drinks, and plenty of shops. Throughout the weekend you can experience lots of Greek culture. There will be live music from the Nick Trivelas Band and the Aegean Duo. Patchwork Players Theatre will be putting on Fun & Fables with AESOP. You can learn about Greek culture and history with video presentations and live discussions. The church will be giving tours of their new sanctuary. be sure you don't miss the traditional folk dancing held in the "plaka" (town square) where the dancers will be wearing handmade costumes. And there will also be a special feature of the Warriors of Greece, who are dedicated to preserving the ideals and memory of 5th century BC Spartans and other Greek troops. The Greek Festival will also have plenty of shops selling all sorts of Greek treasures including apparel, jewelry, art, ceramics, music, souvenirs, and more. And everyone's favorite part of the festival is the food! You will be able to purchase food throughout the festival, inside and out. In the kitchen, they will be serving dinners of broiled chicken, pastichio, peasant shrimp, keftedes (meatballs), roast lamb, Greek salad, dolmades, and spanakopita. After dinner, enjoy one of the many pastries including baklava, koulourakia, finikia, kourambiedes, kataifi, flogeres, and ergolavo. Yum! Not looking for a full dinner? Then enjoy one of the many a la carte items including souvlaki, saganaki, Greek potatoes, chicken strips, Greek fries, gyro, loukoumades, lamb chops, veggie mezedaki appetizer plate, calamari, and Mediterranean pizza. There will also be Greek coffee and imported Greek wine and beer to enjoy.
