Lake Murray Loses A Natural Wonder In The Purple Martins

Lake Murray Loses A Natural Wonder In The Purple Martins

The summer of 2014 will be remembered for the residents and visitors to Lake Murray as the summer without our beloved Purple Martins. As a long term homeowner on Lake Murray and a life long user of her waters the Purple Martins have become an integral part of lake life. During the summer, the annual roost of these birds on Bomb Island was a spectacle to behold. Hundreds of thousands of these birds would flock to their roost in the middle of Lake Murray. A sight hard to describe and impossible to forget.

Earlier this year (mid June) I took the dogs out in the evening to see how many of the birds have started their roost. At that point, everything seemed ordinary since many birds already started to roost at Bomb Island. While not a full show, there were enough birds to entertain me for the evening. Prior to the July 4th fireworks (held June 28th for some unknown reason) there were still more birds and the annual display of Purple Martins appeared to be on track since late July or August seems to be the peak season for their annual roost. My next visit to the island proved to be depressing-no birds.

This year regrettably our small friends have left to roost at Lake Monticello. An evening boat ride to Bomb Island has always been a relaxing way to wind down the day. The warm breeze blowing the smell of the lake, the faint noises by the birds and the sun setting were taken for granted. Who would have ever thought that Lake Murray would lose her beloved Purple Martins?

For years, I always said I wanted to visit Bomb Island in the early morning to watch the birds leave their roost  during a sunrise.  I suppose I waited too late and am left wondering why I traded a few hours of sleep for a lifetime memory.
