Safety Tips When Leaving for the Holidays

Are you planning to leave your home for the holidays? Here are a few tips for peace of mind and safety for your home.

Always keep a current inventory of the valuable items in you home. Of course we don't want to think about the possibility of a break-in, but if so, know what you have. It's easier to take inventory before it's missing, and it's easier for the insurance company to replace them too.

Mail; stop it, or have a neighbor or friend collect it for you. Nothing is more obvious than a pile of newspapers or an overflowing mailbox. Have someone gather your mail, packages and newspapers while you are away.

Turn down the thermostat before you leave. Your home doesn't need to be comfortable when you are away, just warm enough to keep your things safe. Turn it down, but not too low. You still need to protect the items in your house and the pipes.

Alarms and timers are great. If you have an alarm system, that's great. An alarm is a layer of protection when you are not there. Add a timer to a light. It keeps people wondering if the light comes on in the evening, is someone there.

Keep temptation away. Don't leave gifts or enticing things in view of windows and doors. That could be enough to encourage someone to come in to get it.

Unplug stuff. Unplug items that do not need power while you are gone. 1. to ensure there is no electrical problems, 2. might as well save power while you are gone.

House sitter or visitor. If there is a friend or someone who is available to stay at your home while you are away, there is no doubt your home is inhabited, and intruders are more likely to stay away. Or even have someone come by periodically to check on things, and make the house appear to have people home.

The final walk-through. Lastly, make sure you do the final walk-through before leaving. Have a list and check the items off: thermostat, doors and windows locked, light on, appliances off, etc.

Have a great trip and wonderful holiday!
